# Your support inbox is part of cost of goods sold

A ten-minute problem repeated across customers can turn a cheap app into an expensive job.

The feature takes one afternoon to build. Explaining it takes ten minutes per customer. That second number belongs in the business model.

Support work is easy to omit from early pricing because it arrives in small pieces. Add the pieces before deciding that a low monthly price is sustainable.

## Count the recurring causes

Group support requests by the job that failed: setup, import, billing, missing coverage, confusing terminology or an actual bug. Keep the number of affected customers separate from the number of messages in a long conversation.

For a hypothetical data tool, a repeated question about “unknown revenue” may indicate that the interface does not explain its evidence boundaries. Another help article may be less effective than a clearer label beside the number.

## Price the owner's time honestly

If your goal is cash profit before personal tax, you may choose not to deduct a salary in that calculation. Still track owner hours. A business that produces the target cash while requiring constant availability may not meet your low-effort objective.

Use a simple monthly estimate: support minutes per paying account, total support time and the share caused by preventable confusion. Keep the estimate separate from measured history until you have real customers.

## Fix the repeated interruption

Improve the workflow that creates the ticket. Add contextual help at the decision point. Make billing status, export limits and data freshness visible. Give errors a useful next step.

Automation can handle routine classification and drafts, but review sensitive or unusual cases. A fast wrong answer can create more work than a slower accurate one.

Before adding the next feature, inspect the five most common support causes. Removing one recurring source of confusion can improve margin, retention and the founder's evening at the same time.
