At an airport, a beautiful explanation delivered after the gate changes is mostly decoration.

Flighty’s product page emphasizes flight alerts, inbound-aircraft tracking and information about disruptions. Those are the company’s stated capabilities; this article does not independently benchmark alert speed against airlines.

The product question is compelling: which piece of information becomes valuable because it reaches someone while they can still act on it?

Work backwards from the decision

For a hypothetical travel utility, a useful alert might change when a person leaves home, where they walk or whom they contact. The source timestamp, delivery delay and clarity of the recommended next check all affect whether the alert helps.

The same reasoning applies outside travel. A stock notification that arrives after an item sells out, or a deadline reminder that arrives after submission closes, can be technically correct and practically useless.

Price the freshness requirement

A current-data product inherits operational work: upstream outages, changed formats, delayed updates, duplicate notifications and uncertain observations. Build an explicit freshness budget for each important signal.

That budget should describe when the source was observed, when the product processed it and how stale it may be before the interface changes its wording. “Last checked” and “event occurred” should not share a field.

Prototype a decision, not a dashboard

Choose one event that matters to one audience. Deliver a small, understandable update with provenance and a link to the authoritative place to confirm it. Test whether the recipient can make a better decision.

Do not promise guaranteed timeliness when you depend on data you cannot control. A useful product can explain uncertainty without burying it in a technical status page.

Flighty’s public positioning is enough to suggest this design lesson. It is not enough to infer its margins or conclude that a global flight-data product is a low-effort clone. The difficult feature may be the minute in which the information arrives.
