# Ranked number one where, exactly?

A chart position needs a store, country, category, chart type and observation time to mean anything useful.

“Number one app” is a wonderfully compact phrase. The missing context can be larger than the headline.

A ranking belongs to a specific chart. Free, paid and grossing charts answer different questions. Country, category and observation time change the comparison again.

## Save the whole coordinate

Record the platform, storefront country, chart type, category, rank and timestamp. Keep the source's definition where available. Do not compare a category ranking with an overall-store ranking as though they share the same scale.

For a hypothetical utility, reaching a high position in a narrow category may be interesting without implying a large global audience. The relevant next question is how the movement relates to the users you can serve.

## Do not convert rank into exact installs

A rank is an ordering, not a download counter. Inferring precise installs requires an explicit model and suitable evidence. If a tool supplies an estimate, preserve that label and its scope.

Likewise, a grossing position does not directly reveal profit. Costs and the absolute values behind the ordering remain separate questions.

## Watch the sequence

A sustained change across comparable observations can be more informative than one snapshot. Keep gaps in collection visible; do not draw a smooth line through days when no observation exists and imply that the values were measured.

Look for possible context such as a release, a seasonal event or a promotion, but avoid claiming causation without stronger evidence.

When sharing a ranking, include enough detail for another person to find the same chart. “Observed at rank three in this country's paid productivity chart on this date” is less dramatic and much more useful.
