# A good hook opens the door. It should lead to the right room.

Make the first line interesting without making the product pay for an exaggerated promise.

“This tiny app replaces your accountant” might win attention. It also creates a promise a receipt organizer probably cannot keep.

The hook and the product should belong to the same story. When they do not, better click-through can make the business worse by attracting people who will be disappointed immediately.

## Name the useful surprise

A strong hook can come from a real contrast: a neglected task, an unexpected audience, an unusually simple workflow or a result demonstrated honestly. It does not require inventing an earnings figure or claiming that a narrow tool replaces a profession.

For a hypothetical document app, “The receipt you need is always in the wrong chat” introduces a recognizable situation. A demo of finding and exporting that receipt can then deliver what the opening implied.

## Check the implied claim

Ask what a reasonable viewer would believe after the first few seconds. Fine print later in the video may not repair a misleading headline. If the outcome depends on manual work, a paid plan or a limited set of inputs, make the relevant condition understandable.

Keep edited demonstrations faithful to the actual workflow. Speeding up a long process can be acceptable when the edit is clear; presenting a staged result as an ordinary instant response is a different claim.

## Measure the downstream fit

Compare not only clicks, but the first useful action and retained use. A quieter message may attract fewer people who understand the product much better.

When a hook produces attention without activation, inspect the expectation it created before redesigning the onboarding. The wrong promise can make a reasonable product look broken.

The goal is an opening that earns curiosity and a product that rewards it. If you need to explain why the hook was “just marketing” after a customer arrives, rewrite the hook before buying more traffic.
