Most planting calendars ask for your USDA zone and stop there. But a zone only describes one thing: how cold it gets on the worst night of winter. It says nothing about when your season actually starts, how long it lasts, or whether your July will cook a lettuce. Savannah, Georgia and Coos Bay, Oregon are both zone 9a. Their last frosts are seven weeks apart, and one gets 75 more days above 90°F than the other. Any calendar that treats them the same is going to disappoint one of those gardeners.
