Store description excerpt
Thinking of a wild swim in Yorkshire? Check here first. Yorkshire Wild Swim gives you one simple, honest read on whether a river, lake or recognised wild-swimming spot looks clean enough to swim in today. It pulls together public data that's otherwise scattered across half a dozen websites. Each spot gets a clear traffic-light verdict: • Looks clear: no recent rain, no recent upstream sewage spills, river at a normal level • Take care: some rain, or an upstream spill in the last day or two • Avoid today: a spill right now or recently, heavy rain, a high or fast river, or an official pollution warning Tap any spot to see exactly what's behind the verdict: recent rainfall, river level, upstream storm-overflow (sewage) activity, and, for designated bathing waters, the Environment Agency's official pollution-risk forecast. WHY IT'S DIFFERENT • Honest by design. A spot never shows "clear" just because data is missing. We say "no data" instead. Each area shows how many of its spots are clear, need care, or have no data, so nothing is hidden behind a single badge. • A confidence rating on every verdict, so you know whether it's an officially tested bathing water or an estimate from a nearby gauge. • Sewage checked upstream. For river spots we look at the storm overflows genuinely upstream of you, not just anything nearby. • Pin your favourite spots for a zero-tap glance each morning. • Recomputed every hour, with a clear warning if the data ever goes stale. FREE, AND AD-FREE The app is completely free, with no adverts and no paywall. If it's useful, you can leave an optional one-off tip to help cover running costs, but every feature stays free for everyone. WHERE THE DATA COMES FROM This app shows public data from the Environment Agency, a UK government body, and from Yorkshire Water. The official sources are: Environment Agency: https://www.gov.uk/government/organisations/environment-agency River levels, rainfall and flood risk: https://www.gov.uk/check-flooding Bathing water quality: https://environment.data.gov.uk/bwq Yorkshire Water storm overflows: https://www.yorkshirewater.com Environment Agency data is used under the Open Government Licence v3.0. Yorkshire Water data is used under CC BY 4.0. NOT AN OFFICIAL GOVERNMENT APP Yorkshire Wild Swim is an independent app published by Velore Ice Cream Ltd. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or representing the Environment Agency, DEFRA, Yorkshire Water, or any government body or department. It re-presents publicly available data and our own interpretation of it, and links to the official sources above so you can always check the original. IMPORTANT, PLEASE READ This app is guidance based on public data. It is not a test of the water and not a guarantee of safety. Conditions change quickly. Always check local signage, be aware of cold-water and flow hazards, and never swim alone. You swim at your own risk.
