29,781 wrecks in UK and Irish waters, from UK Hydrographic Office records. Depths, survey history, seabed conditions and legal protection status, and the database works with no signal. WreckAtlas is for anyone with an interest in shipwrecks: divers, historians, and the merely curious. It carries the detail that decides whether a site is worth the boat time, and the history behind the ships that are gone. THE RECORD Each wreck record contains the hydrographic information held for that site. For most sites this includes: - Least depth and seabed depth, shown as a range, because a least-depth figure on its own flatters a dive - How proud the wreck stands, and the orientation of the hull on a compass rose - Seabed composition and scour dimensions - Dated survey history with the surveyor named - Tonnage, dimensions, year lost and vessel type - The chart classification the hydrographic office gives the site, in plain English rather than jargon 11,105 records also carry an account of how the wreck was lost, drawn from the hydrographic record: the circumstances, the ship's earlier history, and what became of her afterwards. RESEARCHED HISTORIES Separately, 105 notable ships carry a full written history, researched and checked against published sources, not generated. HMS Hampshire and Lord Kitchener. The Scapa Flow German fleet. The Lusitania. The Mendi. The blockade runner Iona II. What happened, where she lies now, and what you will find on the site. FIND WRECKS NEAR YOU Nearby sorts wrecks by distance from your position, from one kilometre out to fifty. Select one to see its bearing in true and magnetic, the distance, and the wreck's own axis on the dial so you know which way the hull lies. All calculated on the device, so it works offshore with no signal. GPS accuracy varies at sea. Treat positions and bearings as reference, and use proper navigation equipment. WAR GRAVES AND PROTECTED SITES Many wrecks in these waters are legally protected, and the restrictions differ. A Controlled Site under the Protection of Military Remains Act cannot be dived without a licence. A Protected Place can be visited on a look but don't touch basis. Wrecks designated under the Protection of Wrecks Act generally require a licence to dive, while scheduled monuments and Irish National Monuments protections have their own rules. WreckAtlas identifies which designation applies and summarises the restrictions, rather than flagging everything as "protected" and leaving you to find out.
