Store description excerpt

How many English words do you actually know? Not a guess — a measurement, in about three minutes. HOW IT WORKS You see 80 words, one at a time, and answer whether you know each one. Sixty are real, drawn evenly from ten frequency bands: from the thousand most common words in English down to ranks 35,000–45,000, where most native speakers start to run out. The other twenty don't exist. WHY THE INVENTED WORDS MATTER They're not a trick. Every vocabulary test has the same problem: people over-claim, some more than others, and there is no way to tell from the answers alone. The invented words measure exactly that. Claim a few and your score is corrected down by the same rate; claim more than a third of them and the test tells you it can't be scored and asks you to try again. Websites that ask the same questions mostly skip this check. It's the difference between a number and a number worth having. WHAT YOU GET • A range, not a false-precision figure — "8,200 – 11,400 words" • An indicative level, so the range means something • Where your vocabulary stops: a breakdown across all ten frequency bands • Your curve over time, because one measurement is a dot and three are a trend • A word a day drawn from just above your own gap — not a generic list • A share card that looks like a result, not an advert WHAT'S COUNTED Lemmas — base words. "Run", "runs" and "ran" count once. Some tests count word families instead, which group a base word with everything derived from it; the same person scores roughly 15,000 in word families and roughly 40,000 in lemmas. Neither is wrong, but if you compare Wordspan against another test, check which unit it uses first. RUNS ENTIRELY ON YOUR PHONE No account, no sign-up, no server. The whole test works in aeroplane mode, and your results never leave your device. Nothing to delete later, because nothing was sent. ABOUT THE LEVELS The level shown beside your range is an indicative anchor drawn from published vocabulary research. It is not a CEFR assessment, it is not equivalent to any exam, and it does not certify anything. FREE AND PAID The test is free and so is your score. Wordspan Pro adds the depth: the full band breakdown, your history and curve, the daily word from your gap, a refine pass that narrows your range, and data export. Subscriptions start with a 14-day free trial. Word frequencies derived from the Google Books Ngram dataset, used under CC BY 3.0.
