Store description excerpt

A cycle path through Wiesbaden, seen from above, ridden against the clock. Every level is a fixed stretch of street with a finish line at the end of it. The clock is the score. The street does what streets do: cars parked down one side and moving down the other, doors swinging open, somebody stopped across the path with the hazard lights on, side streets with traffic that does not always wait, and the local tradition of leaving the old sofa out on the pavement. Drag anywhere to steer. Hold BRAKE when steering is not going to be enough — braking costs time, and sometimes saves more than it costs. WHAT IS IN YOUR WAY Potholes, kerbstones, bollards, wheelie bins, lamp posts, signposts, planters, dumped e-scooters, roadworks and traffic lights. Broken glass outside the kebab shop. Somebody walking a dog, where the lead between them counts too — you go around the pair or you hit the lead. Somebody crossing without once looking up from their phone. A car pulling out of the moving lane in front of you. Pigeons on the path — ring the bell and they take off, hit one and feathers go everywhere — and the mess they leave, which is the same scratch as dog mess. And of course the dog mess itself, the puddles and the wet leaves, which will not end your run but will take your speed with them and leave your tyres printing tracks down the road afterwards. The ladder is open-ended. Each level is a little busier, a little narrower and a little quicker off the line than the one before, and everything in the catalogue is out on the street by the fifth. NO FAIL STATE, ONLY TIME Everything you hit takes a chunk out of the bike. Dog mess is a scratch, a parked lorry is most of a bar. Empty it and you are on the ground for a few seconds, and then you get up with a full bar and carry on — with the clock running the whole time. Nothing here ends your run early. The only thing a mistake can cost you is seconds, which is the only currency that matters. FIVE BIKES, FIVE COMPROMISES A Stadtrad that is good at everything. A Rennrad that will do 46 km/h and falls apart if you look at it. A Pedelec that is quickest away from the lights and then gives up at 25, because that is what the law says the motor has to do. A Mountainbike that shrugs off a kerb. A Lastenrad that takes an enormous beating and corners like a sofa. Every top speed is one you could really ride the thing at. Times are tracked per bike, because a Rennrad and a Lastenrad are not doing the same thing. A GARAGE THAT HAS TO BE PAID FOR Finishing a level for the first time pays points, and points are the only money in the game. There is nothing to buy with real money — there are no purchases of any kind. A bell, so people who can hear it get out of the way and pigeons take off. Some people stop dead and tell you what they think instead, and from the fourth level onwards more and more of them are wearing headphones. Lights, so some drivers, walkers and dogs think better of it — though never until you are n
