Store description excerpt
Varifokal is a film camera for iPhone. There is no viewfinder, no live preview and no filter menu. You point the camera, press the release, wind the film on, and see the frame afterwards, in Photos. A ROLL AT A TIME Every roll holds 24 exposures. One frame, one wind: the lever locks the shutter until you have advanced the film, and when the roll is full you rewind it and load a fresh one. The counter on the deck is the only thing that tells you how much you have left. TWO STOCKS, BOTH FINISHED NOCTURNE is a tungsten cinema negative, printed. Cool shadows, warm highlights, and a soft halation around the brightest edges. MONO is a reporter's black and white with a yellow-filter response and silver grain. Choosing a stock changes the whole camera, not just the picture. DEVELOPED, NOT FILTERED Nothing here is a lookup table bought off a shelf. Each stock is a two-stage photochemical model. Your frame is exposed onto a modelled negative at gamma 0.62, then printed through a second stock at gamma 2.05. Three emulsion layers run at their own speeds, so colour drifts with exposure the way film does, and development inhibitors separate colour by chemistry rather than by a saturation slider. Highlights roll off instead of clipping, shadows stay dense and separated, and the grain goes quiet in the blacks where silver halide goes quiet. 135 AND ezPan 135 is fixed 35mm, framed at 3:2. ezPan shoots the ultra-wide camera through a 65 x 24 gate, the XPan format, and always exports landscape however you were holding the phone. Both are blind. Neither has autofocus: the lens is scale-focused past its hyperfocal distance, so roughly 1.2 m to infinity stays sharp. CONTROLS THAT CLICK ISO, shutter and exposure compensation sit on machined dials with detents you can feel. Leave them on A and the meter does the work, or set them yourself and the camera holds what you set. Flash is a lever. The release is red, so it is the one control you can find without looking. Every dial, the shutter, the advance, the rewind and the door latch each have their own haptic. WHAT YOU GET Photos receives one developed JPEG per frame, nothing else. Film, exposure and lens data are embedded if you want them. Location is off by default and written locally into the JPEG if you switch it on. There is no account, no upload, no analytics and no tracking. Nothing leaves the phone. REQUIREMENTS A physical iPhone with a rear camera, running iOS 17 or later. Varifokal needs camera access to expose a frame and add-only Photos access to archive it.
