Supercar, also known as an exotic car, is a loosely defined category of street-legal, high-performance, and high-end sports cars. In recent years, the term "hypercar" has been used more frequently to refer to the highest performance supercars. Supercars are often designed and marketed as the flagship models in a vehicle manufacturer's sports car lineup. In the United States, during the 1960s, the term "supercar" was sometimes used to refer to muscle cars of that era. The Lamborghini Miura, produced between 1966 and 1973, is generally regarded as the first true supercar. The definition of a supercar can be subjective and influenced by personal biases. In the 1960s, what are now considered muscle cars were referred to as supercars, and sometimes the term was spelled with a capital "S." By 1966, the concept of the supercar had become an official industry standard. Automotive magazines from that time, like Car Life and Car and Driver, frequently mentioned supercars and their appeal to enthusiasts. After the decline of muscle cars in the 1970s, the term "supercar" evolved to represent vehicles in the league of Lamborghini or Ferrari. Enthusiasts and customizers have modified various high-performance vehicles to achieve even greater performance. The term "hypercar" emerged later and is used to describe the highest echelon of supercars, often limited in production and priced at around $1 million or more.
