Store description excerpt
Sluices of the Canal Lock is a historical registry and hydraulic pressure simulator engineered for canal preservationists, civil engineering historians, and industrial archeologists documenting early 19th-century timber lock paddle mechanisms, cast-iron rack-and-pinion winding gears, and mortised balance beams. The application replaces modern water-management software with historical structural metrics, archiving the physical dimensions, leather flap seals, gear tooth profiles, and winding mechanisms used to control headwater levels across historic inland navigation networks. Build a structured registry of sluice gear assemblies by recording installation identity, canal reach station, canal company, construction era, and winding gear mechanism. Document rack-and-pinion geometry through rack pitch and pinion tooth counts, identify timber paddle species, and preserve seating dimensions including leather seal flap width, gate pintle socket radius, and balance beam mortise depth. Create a hydraulic record for each assembly with maximum headwater depth, sill level, paddle height, paddle width, and leather seal condition. Stored records bring these measurements together with hydraulic force, crank torque, headwater, and fill-time values for individual lock mechanisms. The Winding Resistance simulator uses upper pound water level and crank gear ratio to resolve hydrostatic force on the paddle and the hand-crank torque required to lift it. A lock chamber section provides a visual representation of the hydraulic relationship between the gate and water level. The Waterway view presents the submerged gate face with head, chamber, and sluice information, allowing winding gear nodes to be operated against the recorded head and assigned to the active culvert. The registry organizes documented assemblies by mechanism and preserves photographed examples alongside recorded gear data. Search records by matrix code, reach, or company, filter assemblies by winding mechanism, and open individual entries to review their archived identity, dimensions, material selections, hydraulic values, and photograph. The Lock Logbook summarizes the on-device ledger with assembly totals, seal condition counts, photographed records, mean headwater, mean pinion count, deepest and shallowest lock values, and mechanism data across the stored registry.
