Store description excerpt

Join a McMaster University–led research study exploring how everyday screen use relates to the wellbeing of youth living in rural communities. This study looks at how young people use smartphones and other digital devices in daily life, and how these patterns connect to mood, stress, social connection, and overall mental wellbeing. By taking part, you will help researchers better understand real-world screen use and work with youth and families to co-develop practical tools that support healthier, more balanced digital habits. What Does the App Do? The app securely collects objective screen-time information over a one-month period, such as total screen use, app usage patterns, and time-of-day trends. It also includes brief check-in questions sent at different times of day to capture how you’re feeling and what you’re doing in the moment. These check-ins are short, optional, and designed to take only a few moments to complete, helping researchers better understand daily experiences as they happen. Why This Study Matters • Focuses on youth aged 14–24 living in rural communities • Uses real-world smartphone data rather than estimates or memory-based reports • Examines how screen use relates to mood, focus, sleepiness, and social connection • Supports the co-creation of a Screen Time Management Tool with youth and families • Aims to inform future supports, resources, and policies for healthier digital use Your Privacy Comes First Protecting your privacy is a top priority. The app follows strict academic research and security standards. It does not collect message content, browsing content, or location data. All information is de-identified and linked only to a study ID—not your name or personal identity. Make an Impact By participating, you are contributing to research that centers youth voices and helps build evidence-based, practical tools to support mental wellbeing in rural communities. Download the app and take part in research working toward healthier relationships with technology—for yourself and for others.
