A respected member of the American Society of Golf Course Architects, Bates has worked closely with PGA Tour professionals Fred Couples and Johnny Miller on designs throughout the United States, including Hawaii, as well as in Europe and Southeast Asia. From 1983 to 1988, he served as Vice President of Design and Construction Services for Jack Nicklaus Golf Services in North Palm Beach, Florida.
