Store description excerpt
Pick up a rock on a trail and wonder what it is. RockLens gives you the field-guide answer — Mohs hardness, crystal system, formation type, and a confidence-honest ID — so you know exactly what you're holding, right where you found it. WHY ROCKHOUNDS AND CRYSTAL FANS USE ROCKLENS Identify any rock, mineral, or crystal in seconds. RockLens names the likely match with a confidence indicator, then opens a profile: common and mineral names, group, color and luster, Mohs hardness, crystal system, and how the stone formed (igneous, sedimentary, metamorphic, or hydrothermal). From a roadside pebble to an amethyst geode, you know what you found. Read it like a geologist. Each profile breaks down the diagnostic traits geologists use — hardness, streak, cleavage and fracture, crystal habit, and luster — so you tell quartz from calcite, or granite from gneiss. Tell natural from imitation. Many tumbled "crystals" sold today are dyed, reconstituted, or lab-grown glass. RockLens explains the visual clues that separate a natural mineral from an imitation — bubbles, dye pooled in cracks, suspiciously perfect color — as a learning tool. When confidence is low, it says so. Discover the lore behind the stone. For collectors who love the stories, every profile can surface birthstone associations and the cultural folklore of a stone — the human side of geology, as background, not medical advice. Build a mineral cabinet that's all yours. Save every specimen into a personal collection on your device. Track the minerals, groups, and crystal systems you've found, watch your cabinet grow, and earn badges as you complete families and find rarer ones. Learn as you go. Free in-app guides any rock lover can read: how confidence works, how to run a simple hardness or streak test at home, how to tell look-alikes apart, and how to clean and store specimens. HOW IT WORKS 1. Capture or pick a photo — a clean, well-lit specimen on a plain backdrop. 2. RockLens identifies the likely match with a confidence indicator; confirm or adjust by hand. 3. Open the profile for traits, hardness, formation, location, and folklore. 4. Save it to your collection and keep exploring. Identifications, hardness and formation notes, and natural-versus-imitation clues are for general learning and can be wrong on look-alikes. Do not rely on the app for safety-critical or professional decisions, and never taste, lick, inhale dust from, or carelessly handle unknown minerals — some contain heavy metals or asbestos-b
