Store description excerpt
Roadkills India is a citizen science app that helps document and reduce wildlife deaths on India's roads, railways, canals, and power lines. Every year, tens of thousands of wild animals — snakes, frogs, leopards, mongooses, birds, and even elephants — die on India's expanding network of linear infrastructure. Most deaths go unrecorded. Without data, mitigation never happens. That's where you come in.🌿 WHAT THIS APP DOES When you encounter a dead animal on the road, you can quickly: Photograph the animal (1–3 photos, taken safely) Capture GPS location automatically Identify the taxonomic group (Bird, Mammal, Reptile, Frog, or Other) Optionally enter the species name and road description Submit — even when offline Your data joins India's largest citizen-contributed dataset of wildlife mortality, used by conservation researchers, government bodies, the National Tiger Conservation Authority, the National Highways Authority of India, and state forest departments.🛡️ SAFETY FIRST The app prioritizes your safety above all else. Before each photo, you're reminded to: Pull over fully off the road Switch on hazard lights Watch for oncoming traffic Not stop on expressways where it's unsafe Skip the report if conditions are dangerous Your safety always comes before data collection.📡 WORKS OFFLINE Many roadkills happen on remote highways with no network. Roadkills India is designed for spotty connectivity: Save reports offline; sync automatically when reconnected View your contributed records anytime Map your records across India 🔬 OPEN SCIENCE Aggregated, anonymous data is shared publicly. Identifiable record data may be shared with researchers, road ecologists, conservation organizations, forest officials, and highway authorities for mitigation planning — following our Data Sharing Policy. You retain ownership of your contributions and can request deletion of your account at any time. Records remain in the scientific dataset anonymously, preserving research value while respecting your privacy.🌎 WHO BUILDS THIS Roadkills India is built by the Landscape Research and Conservation Foundation (LRCF), a non-profit based in Nagpur, India. The campaign is supported by a seed grant from The Habitats Trust. LRCF works at the intersection of conservation, research, and outreach, with projects addressing human-wildlife conflict, ecological restoration, and now — through your contributions — road ecology across India.📞 CONTACT & SUPPORT For questions, data requests, or concerns, contact our Grievance Officer at milind@landscapes.org.in.
