Retro Tube plays any video — streamed from the Internet Archive, scanned from a folder on your Mac, dropped from Finder, or pasted as a URL — through real-time graphics filters that emulate twelve classic computers. THE TWELVE COMPUTERS • Apple II — HGR, DHGR, LORES, DLORES (with optional hardware-accurate NTSC artifact-colour encoder) • Commodore 64 — Hires, Multicolour • VIC-20 — Hires, Multicolour • NES — full 54-colour palette • Game Boy — DMG, four shades of olive green • MSX — Screen 2, Screen 8 • Tandy CoCo — Color, Hires • PC EGA — 16 colours, 640×350 • PC CGA — 4-colour palette 1 • BBC Micro — Mode 1, Mode 2 • Amstrad CPC — Mode 0, Mode 1 • Macintosh — original 1984 B&W (1-bit, 512×342) and Mac II 8-bit colour (256-colour Apple System CLUT) Each mode renders to its real native resolution and authentic hardware palette, with Floyd–Steinberg dithering for smooth gradients. Switch live between modes and watch the same frame re-quantised on the fly. THREE WAYS TO BROWSE • Internet Archive — search public-domain movies right from the sidebar • Local library — register one or more folders on your Mac; Retro Tube scans them recursively for playable movies. Folder access survives across launches • Bookmarks — save favourites from either source into a single mixed list CRT EFFECTS Adjustable scanline intensity, phosphor glow and dithering strength — every change updates the canvas live as the video plays. AUTHENTIC APPLE II ENCODER A toggle for cell-level NTSC artifact-colour rendering — recreates the way real Apple IIs filled in solid colour areas without black gaps between same-colour pixels. Includes a horizontal NTSC chroma-blur post-pass that simulates the bandwidth-limited chroma of composite-video output. SIX RETRO UI SKINS Re-skin the whole app chrome to look like an Apple II, Apple IIgs, Commodore 64 or Game Boy — bundled bitmap fonts include PrintChar 21, PR Number 3, Shaston 320/640 and the authentic Pet Me 64 character ROM. The macOS title bar is tinted to match. EXPORT Bake the retro filter (with scanlines and glow) into a standard H.264 MP4 with the original audio preserved. Share, embed, or post the result anywhere.
