Store description excerpt

Renoir is built on decisions. Here are some of them. There are no ratings. No stars, no scores, no average of strangers. The opinion is yours to form, and nobody developed an eye by reading what other people decided. There is one number, though: the CRI. It measures how much of cinema runs through a film, a person, a niche: who learned from it, what it taught, how early it arrived. It says nothing about how good anything is, or how much Renoir recommends it. The app will tell you what it measures, and what it never will. There is a map. Films and people hang in it like planets, and any name opens into everyone they worked with and everything else those people made. Cinema is one long conversation between people who watched each other work; the map is the record of who was talking to whom, and when. If a record carries no year, no year is printed. If a film has no credits, the section does not appear. Nothing is invented to fill a space. There is no feed. Nothing chooses what you see next. Open a film and the plot summary is closed. You can tap it, but a paragraph about what happens is the one thing you did not come for. What opens is the billing: who made it. That was your actual question. Your notes live on your device. No copy ever reaches the server. That is not a setting; it is the design. Three thousand films, chosen rather than scraped. Tokyo Story is here, and Ashes and Diamonds, and The Trial, and Sholay, and Akira. Nineteen thousand people stand behind them, including the cinematographers and editors most apps never bother to hold. Keep what matters to you. A watchlist, a log of what you have seen, and if you want, the four films you would hand a stranger.
