The Fitzroy Readers offer a tried and tested phonics literacy program for primary age students. Graded sets of story books systematically introduce new sounds (such as ay and sh) as well as sight words (such as you and one). This intuitive app is simple enough for young students to navigate independently. The Fitzroy Readers stories are displayed on the screen along with extra phonics features; students have the option to read the stories themselves, or read along with the clear narration. When narrated, each word is underlined as it is spoken to show the connection between how words are spelt and how they are said. When a student is stuck on a word, they can click on it to hear it phonically decoded while each sound is highlighted. This way, students quickly become familiar with spelling conventions as well as exceptions. Word elements are highlighted in different colours to indicate letter sounds, digraphs, silent letters and sight words.
