Store description excerpt
PartWrite Harmony Lab is an interactive four-voice part-writing workshop for AP Music Theory students, choir section leaders, church pianists, and conservatory freshmen. It is a live SATB staff pad with a rules engine—not a chord dictionary and not a flashcard deck. Place soprano, alto, tenor, and bass notes on a live grand-staff pad with voice-color stems, range shading per voice, pitch pickers, duration chips, and accidental toggles. Drag a note head to change pitch or long-press to rest. Run the part-writing rules engine on the current phrase to highlight parallel fifths and octaves, voice crossing, spacing beyond an octave-plus-tone, illegal doubling, unresolved leading tones, and direct fifths or octaves. Each hit opens a plain-language fix hint so you can correct the line on the spot. Realize figured-bass drills from a complete seeded deck of multi-bar bass lines with figures already filled in. Lock the bass, fill the upper voices, then reveal a model-solution overlay and diff your parts against it. Work species counterpoint (1st through 5th) against a seeded cantus-firmus shelf; species-specific checks enforce note-against-note writing, dissonance preparation and resolution, and climax placement before you can mark a drill complete. Label Roman numerals and cadence types on practice chorales with a drag-on palette, then validate labels against seeded answer keys on hymn and chorale excerpts shipped in the app. Browse the interactive reference atlas: spin a circle-of-fifths wheel, open chord-tone tendency charts and doubling preference tables, and use a keyboard-to-staff pitch map that jumps you into a blank pad pre-set to that key. Play back any score with polyphonic tones. Mute or solo each voice, scrub tempo, loop a selected bar range, and sound a reference A440 tuning tone before singing or playing along. Filter the seeded exercise shelf by module (chorale SATB, figured bass, species, cadences), difficulty band, and mastery stars—every drill is fully authored on first launch with zero placeholder rows. Export the current score as a print-ready PDF or shareable PNG for lessons. Keep drafts in an on-device document store with rename, duplicate, and delete—no account required. Open the Daily Species Bite home-screen widget into the matching drill via deep link and finish it inside the full bench with the same rules engine and playback. Turn chorale and counterpoint homework into a studio bench with instant rule feedback, full seeded drill decks, and voice-aware playback—so you catch voice-leading mistakes before class instead of waiting on red pen marks.
