The guide calls for a colour you don't own. Again. PaintKeep answers the question every other paint app dodges: not "what is the equivalent in some other range", but "what is on my shelf right now that will actually work". Record the pots you own once. From then on, any colour named in a tutorial, army list or painting guide resolves to a ranked list of substitutes from your own rack — scored by perceptual colour distance, so a true swap is visibly different from a close-enough. HOW IT WORKS • Add the paints you actually own from a catalogue of thousands of colours across nineteen ranges. • Name the colour a guide asked for — search it, or lift it straight out of a photo of the tutorial. • Read the match rail. Every paint you own is plotted by real perceptual distance, with the closest one shown butted edge to edge against the target so you can judge the join yourself. • Save the swap into a project, and find it again three weeks later when the model comes back off the shelf. WHY THE DISTANCE IS THE POINT Most colour tools compare paints in RGB, which is not how eyes work — it will happily tell you two dark browns are further apart than two bright yellows that look identical. PaintKeep uses CIEDE2000 in CIE Lab space, the same perceptual difference model used in colour-critical printing and manufacturing. Every result is scored and sorted into four honest bands: Match, Close, Usable, Different. When nothing on your shelf lands close, it says so, and names the nearest thing anyway. WORKS WITHOUT A SIGNAL The whole colour catalogue ships inside the app. No account, no sign-in, no network calls at all. It works at a club table, in a basement, or on a plane. ABOUT THE COLOUR DATA Colour values are derived from published manufacturer swatch data and community conversion tables. They approximate a physical pigment under unknown lighting — they are not spectrophotometer readings, and thin or heavy application shifts them further. Matches tell you what to reach for first, not what is guaranteed to be identical. Metallics, washes and inks carry an extra caution, because a single flat colour value can't describe how they behave on a model.
