Pachisi is India's own board game — the cowrie-shell game of the chaupar family, played on a cross-shaped cloth and moved by six shells instead of dice. Every cross-and-circle race game that came after it, Ludo included, is a simplification of it. This is the original, with its rules kept intact. Free. Offline. No account, no sign-in, no connection. HOW PACHISI IS PLAYED Throw six cowrie shells and move by how many land mouth-up. One shell up is 10. None up is 25 — pachis, the throw the game is named for. Six, ten and twenty-five are graces. A grace earns you another throw and lets a new pawn onto the board, so a good hand keeps going. Race your four pawns counter-clockwise down your arm, around the cloth, and home to the Charkoni at the centre. Finishing needs an exact count — overshoot and the throw is wasted. Land on an opponent by exact count and their pawn goes back to the start, and you throw again. Castle squares are safe ground: nothing can be captured there. Two pawns of one colour on the same square become a doubled piece. They travel as one and only an equal group can take them — a pair needs a pair. They come apart again on a castle, or once they turn for home. No internet needed, ever. Your game saves itself, so you can put it down mid-match and pick it up later. THE REAL RULES Pachisi is not Ludo, and this is not Ludo with a new coat of paint. The rules here follow the mainstream sources rather than the western simplifications — entry on a grace, capture by exact count, the doubled piece, the twenty-five that gives the game its name. Blockades, three-sixes penalties and protected home lanes are Ludo inventions, and they are deliberately left out. MADE TO LOOK LIKE THE REAL THING Embroidered cloth on a night courtyard, brass-inlaid castle squares, and shells that tumble when you throw them. Portrait, one hand, no clutter. THE EMPERORS' GAME Akbar played pachisi at Fatehpur Sikri on a courtyard laid out in red and white stone, using people from his court as the pieces. The court is still there, and so is the one at Agra. They are the oldest hard evidence of the game we have, and his biographer records that it was already popular by then. PACHISI, CHAUPAR OR CHAUSAR? Across India these names are used for one another, and the board is the same cross of cloth. The old distinction is what you throw. Pachisi is played with six cowrie shells, and the pawns start off the board in the Charkoni.
