Each time you live another month, you earn income, pay taxes and bills, and deal with whatever life throws at you. One month you’re moving up; the next you’re laid off, hit with a surprise expense, or staring at an opportunity that sounds a little too good to be true. Whatever is left is yours to invest. Read the news, decide which sources you trust, study the numbers, and buy or sell in a fictional market. Index funds are steady. Individual companies can thrive or collapse. High-risk picks might take off—or go to zero. But money isn’t the only score. Spend too much and saving gets harder. Spend too little on yourself and your happiness falls, your skills grow more slowly, and you can burn out. Getting rich means nothing if you can’t stand the life that got you there. Your lifestyle sets your retirement target. The more you choose to spend, the more you need to save. Try to build enough wealth to cover 25 years of that lifestyle and retire before 65.
