Store description excerpt
What's missing in habit apps is an effective operant conditioning loop for each desired behavior. Building a habit is as easy as A,B,C. A. (Antecedent). The cue/trigger/prompt that signals it's time to do a behavior. B. (Behavior). The behavior to increase in frequency. C. (Consequence). The reinforcement or punishment which happens immediately after the behavior is completed or not. Other apps have significant limitations when considering the science of habit formation and just don't work well enough. Some issues are as follow: 1. Antecedents aren't obvious/distinct enough. Notifications just won't cut it in 2026. Most people don't turn them on and those that do are mostly habituated to that cue and it won't grab attention. You probably need to complete desired habits in a more stable context than you currently are doing. 2. Behaviors aren't scoped right. People using habit apps as a whole set up pretty ineffective habits. Habits should probably be "tinier", more clear and smart goal-like than you currently are doing. 3. Consequences provided by existing habit apps aren't meaningful enough to be effective. Additional, most habit apps charge you money to add past a certain amount of habits. This is a non-starter for the majority of consumers. That's why I built Operant, a behavior change app for building habits more easily, it's currently available on iOS and Apple Watch with hopefully more platforms coming soon. Right now, it's completely free with no download cost, no subscriptions, and no ads. Operant empowers you to build habits by letting you use operant conditioning on yourself. Just set up the A,B,C for each habit. More features are coming online day by day and I already think it has a better habit loop set up than anything else on the market. My goal is to keep that core functionality for free forever. I may offer adjacent subscription or something in future because I have a family to support and I would love to be financially able to spend more time building this product to be better. But I want the core habit tracking functionality with unlimited habits to be free forever. It's pretty easy to code this and you shouldn't be charged for it. I've shipped quite a few apps to the store and even though I think this is the best thing I've ever made, ironically this has probably gotten the fewest downloads ever compared to anything I've ever shipped! If Operant sounds like a useful tool for you please consider downloading, using, then and writing a review on the App Store so I can improve the product. I've read the following books that influenced the function and design of Operant. Good Habits, Bad Habits by Wendy Wood Tiny Habits: The Small Changes That Change Everything by BJ Fogg Atomic Habits by James Clear Don't Die by Bryan Johnson Behave: The Biology of Humans at Our Best and Worst by Robert M. Sapolsky Determined: A Science of Life Without Free Will by Robert M. Sapolsky Outlive by Peter Attia, MD The 7 Habits of Highly Effe
