Northern Spirit puts a seasoned river guide in your pocket. Photograph any rapid, drop numbered pins on every feature you spot — tongue, eddy, hole, strainer, horizon line — then draw your intended paddle line across the image. The moment you tap "Score this read," a deterministic rule engine grades your scouting: a whitewater grade (I–VI), an accuracy percentage, an exposure rating, and a per-move verdict table that tells you exactly where your read held and where it broke down. The built-in Atlas covers all 14 river features in depth — how each one forms, how it reads from the bank, what move it calls for, and how it gets misread. Six paddle moves are mapped to the features they suit, so every scored read teaches you something concrete. A Grade reference explains the International Whitewater Scale from Class I to Class VI with consequence statements for each band. A Kit tab keeps your 12-item safety checklist — helmet through pin kit — packed and ready before you leave the trailhead. Your Log tracks every read you have ever scored: accuracy trend, exposure history, grade distribution, and a heat strip showing which features you pin most — and which you keep missing. Twelve pre-scored reads on named boreal rapids ship with the app, so the Log is alive from the very first launch. Everything runs entirely offline. No account, no map tile, no gauge feed. Northern Spirit grades the read you made against the river in your photograph, and says nothing about whether running the water is safe. That call is always yours.
