Whether we’re walking or hiking, canoeing or skiing, exploring the outdoors keeps us alive. These wild places have been explored before us, by generations of citizen scientists observing the plants and animals around them, recording their encounters. Nearby Nature enables you to experience the observations of plants and animals that others have made before you, while you travel through wild places. Keep your phone open to see the nearest observations to your location while you walk. Photos, identifications, comments and metadata were all contributed to iNaturalist, which is where the data in Nearby Nature comes from. * Who is it for * Nearby Nature is for everyone who spends time in natural places, from children to adults, from curious beginners to expert scientists. The only requirement is an appreciation for nature and the plants and animals that inhabit it. Nearby Nature should work in all countries. It has been developed for Android phones, and will soon be available for other platforms such as iOS. * How does it work * Every few seconds, Nearby Nature scans the area around you for observations within the iNaturalist database. If it doesn’t find any observations very close by, it scans in a larger radius, until it finds a nearby observation or reaches the searching limit. You can hit the pause button at any time to stop searching, and click the play button to resume. Soon, you’ll also be able to choose which observations you’re interested in seeing, such as limiting it to observations by a specific person, observations within a specific date range, etc. * What we value * Nature-first: The protection of - and respect for - plants and animals is our highest priority Private: None of your personally identifiable information is tracked or stored Lightweight: This is a simple app that loads as quickly as possible * What to do about issues * If you experience any errors, warning messages, or anything else in the app that doesn’t feel right, please let us know so we can tackle it as soon as possible.
