Snake, crossed with the times table. A question sits above the board — 7 × 8 = ? — and four numbers sit on it. Steer the snake onto the right one. The snake grows, the next question comes, and the tables get practised without anyone sitting down to practise them. BUILT FOR LEARNING, NOT FOR SCORING • A wrong number costs a heart and shows the fact worked out, then the game carries on. Nobody is sent back to the start for a mistake. • The wrong answers on the board are the mistakes children actually make — a slipped row, one group too many — never random numbers. • Walls do not hurt: the snake slides off one edge and comes back on the other. The skill being trained is the times table, not spatial control. PRACTISE WHAT NEEDS PRACTISING • The whole table to 100, or answers up to 20, 30 or 50 for a child starting out • One row at a time: the 3s on Monday, the 7s on Thursday • Every exercise keeps its own best score SEE WHERE THE GAPS ARE The progress page shows how many answers were right, and lists the facts that keep going wrong — 7 × 8, three right out of nine. That is the page a parent reads before deciding what to ask at breakfast.
