A calm place to put your hands. Touch the screen. A ripple opens under your finger, carrying a tone and a pulse you can feel. Hold it there and the ripple settles into a slow circle. Drag, and it follows you across the glass. There is nothing to learn, nothing to score and nothing to get wrong. Five fingers at once, if that is the kind of evening it is. The tones sit somewhere between a music box and rain on a window: Relax soft and slow, Focus clearer and brighter, Sleep low and deep. Underneath runs ocean, or forest, or the quiet of a night sky, or brown noise, on a volume slider of its own, so the room can be as full or as empty as you want it. When it is time to stop, set a fade. The sound holds where you left it, then thins out, then goes. It carries on with the screen off and lets go of the audio at the end, so nothing is left running beside you. When your hands need to slow down first, there is a breathing circle. You set the inhale, the hold and the exhale, and it keeps that shape for as long as you stay with it. It counts nothing. Six themes. Ocean Waves is free and it is the entire app — Forest, Sunset, Night Sky, Spring Garden and Brown Noise change the colors, the tones and the sound behind them. You buy them once, or you never do. Everything is adjustable: how bright the ripples are, how strong the haptics are, whether there are haptics at all. High contrast and reduced motion are there for when the ordinary version is too much. The palette is color blind friendly. VoiceOver reads the controls. It collects nothing — no analytics, no tracking, no account, no sign-up — and it works with the network switched off. The only thing it ever sends is a purchase check to Apple. Made for the minutes when you're wound up, or can't settle, or just need something to do with your hands while your head catches up.
