Matrix Fit Trap is a linear algebra visualisation built on one idea that most courses state but never show: the determinant of a two-by-two matrix is the signed area of the parallelogram formed by its column vectors. Two glowing arrows extend from the origin of a coordinate grid — one teal, one amber. They are the matrix's column vectors. The parallelogram they define fills with soft teal light. The formula below updates live: the first entry times the fourth, minus the second times the third, equals the current area. Drag either vector and both the shape and the formula change simultaneously. The area is not an approximation. It is the determinant, expressed as geometry. Three things happen when the player drags the vectors that no textbook makes fully clear. The first: the determinant can be achieved in infinitely many ways. Any parallelogram with area six — a two-by-three rectangle, a sheared rhombus, a rotated shape at any angle — produces the same determinant. The formula ad minus bc has countless solutions for every non-zero value. The second: when one vector crosses the other, the fill changes from teal to crimson. The determinant has gone negative. The orientation of the transformation reversed. The matrix now includes a reflection. The third, and most striking: when the two vectors become parallel, the parallelogram collapses to a line. The determinant reaches zero. An electric red flash fires from the origin, particles burst outward along the degenerate direction, the canvas shakes, and a warning reads SINGULAR. The matrix is irreversible. Every point in the plane has been crushed to the same line. No information can be recovered. Three game modes build on this geometry. Area mode gives a target determinant and asks the player to reach it by dragging. Fit mode shows a gold target parallelogram and asks the player to match it exactly. Trap mode scatters gold dots on the canvas and asks the player to enclose all of them in the parallelogram using the minimum possible area — the minimum determinant — for maximum score. The containment check runs at sixty frames per second using the inverse matrix, making the inverse visible as the operation that answers which points are inside the player's transformation.
