Store description excerpt

Maiitrika is a calm place for children to meet letters, words and numbers. One card fills the screen: a letter, the sound it makes, a picture, and a word — in both Hindi and English. A child meeting क also meets "lotus". A child meeting L also meets पत्ता. The two alphabets teach each other. Nothing here is trying to hold your child's attention longer than they want to give it. • No scores, no stars, no streaks, no timers • No sound unless something is touched — nothing plays on its own • No advertising, no analytics, no accounts, no links out • Works completely offline • Nothing is ever marked wrong THREE SUBJECTS, EQUAL WEIGHT हिंदी — Hindi • स्वर, 13 vowels • व्यंजन, 36 consonants • मात्रा, the vowel signs that turn letters into words • पहले शब्द, 16 first words English • A B C — 26 letters and the sounds they make, not just their names • Blending — c–a–t — where letters become reading • sh, ch, th — two letters, one sound गणित — Maths, in both languages • Counting 1 to 20 on a ten frame, so quantity can be seen • Shapes • Adding, shown filling in rather than stated Numbers appear as १ and 1 together, and are read aloud in both languages. A quantity is the same quantity whichever script names it. A STORY YOU MAKE TOGETHER Choose a character, choose who comes to help, choose where it happens — and the app tells a bedtime or playtime story about them, in Hindi and English. Every line was written by a person; nothing is generated by a model, and none of it needs the internet. Each page carries a question for you to ask before turning it, and the story ends by handing back the three Devanagari letters it was built from — heard first in real words, then one tap from their own card. HOW IT TEACHES Letters are read aloud slowly, twice, with a rest between — the rests are where a child says it back. Trace any letter with a finger and it fills in as you go; stray outside and it simply doesn't, so the letter corrects you rather than anyone else doing it. Letters already met come back for quiet practice, spaced further apart each time they are remembered and sooner when they are not. Look-alike letters are brought close together so the difference has to be noticed. Practice offers only "got it" and "not yet", and "not yet" simply brings the letter back sooner. Maiitrika collects nothing. There is no network connection in the app at all.
