A soil test report states its recommendation in pounds of nitrogen, phosphate and potash per 1,000 square feet. The bag in your shed says 10-10-10. Loam closes that gap. THE GAP IS BIGGER THAN IT LOOKS Take a recommendation of 50 pounds of nitrogen per acre. From ammonium sulfate at 21% nitrogen that is 5.48 pounds of product. From urea at 46% it is 2.5 pounds. Same recommendation, same ground, and the second bag needs less than half the weight of the first. Get that backwards and you have either wasted a season or burned the bed. The arithmetic is not hard, but it is three divisions on a windy afternoon with a bag in one hand, and it is the step where the report stops being useful to most people. BAG RATE - FREE, FOREVER Enter the three numbers from your report, the three numbers on the bag, and the size of the bed. Loam gives you pounds and ounces of that specific product. Then it does the part a calculator will not. No single bag hits all three targets at once, so Loam shows what the other two nutrients actually do at that rate: potash 0.16 pounds short, phosphate over by a third. If your report asks for no phosphate at all and the bag is carrying it anyway, Loam says so, because phosphate the soil cannot use runs off into surface water. The method is New Mexico State University Extension Guide H-119, and it is named on the screen. LOAM PRO - ONE PURCHASE Lime, three ways, in descending order of how much the number can be trusted. If your report printed a lime rate, Loam rescales it to your bed and to the material you actually bought - wood ash at 50% calcium carbonate equivalent needs twice the weight of pelletized lime. If your report has a buffer pH, Loam uses it. If it has neither, you get a texture estimate that is labelled an estimate. And it will not hand you one large number. Over 50 pounds per 1,000 square feet in a single pass is too much lime, so a 120-pound requirement comes back as three applications four to six months apart with a re-test between them. Lime is slow and very easy to overshoot. Beds. Each bed with its own area, texture and target pH band, and every soil test it has had. The bands matter: potatoes want 5.0 to 5.5 because liming invites scab, brassicas want 6.5 to 7.5 because clubroot is suppressed at the top of that range. Two beds, opposite instructions, same garden. Log. What went down, on which bed, when - and the running nitrogen total per bed for the last twelve months. That is the number no single calculation can give you, because it only exists across passes. Organic. Compost, manures and meals against the same nitrogen target. The figure that matters here is not the analysis but how much of the nitrogen actually arrives this season: blood meal releases about 90% of it, finished compost about 15%. Matching a target on paper with compost can mean only a fraction reaches the crop, and Loam shows you both numbers rather than letting them look interchangeable. Bed fill.
