Store description excerpt

Your camera roll already holds the film. Life2Film finds it. Pick a day, a trip, a month of your kid. The app watches every second of that footage on the phone itself: where the movement is, who is in frame, which takes are steady and which are forty seconds of pavement. Then it cuts the good parts into something short enough to watch twice. NOTHING SURFACES ON ITS OWN No notifications, no "remember this day", no film you did not ask for. You choose the period and you choose the clips, and nothing is made until you do. NOTHING LEAVES YOUR IPHONE No upload, no account, no queue. Faces and framing come from Apple's Vision framework; the scene cuts and the tempo are measured on the phone by a native engine, which also assembles the timeline. A film takes from a few seconds to about a minute, and it works the same in airplane mode. NINE WAYS TO START The Make sheet asks what the film is for, and the answer sets the length, the shape and the cut: • Just a film: the best moments, half a minute • Summary of a day, a month or a year: the period's own name as the title • Reels: vertical, on the beat, 15 seconds • Travel: day by day, with the date in the picture at every change of shooting day • Chronicle: everything in the order it happened, up to ten minutes • Vlog: speech leads the cut, the phrases go on screen, and the track sits under the voice • Happy birthday: people in frame outrank scenery, and the track steps back under the voices • New Year, in December: lights, people and the toast • Set it up yourself: every row by hand A preset is starting values, not a cage. One row on the setup screen swaps the style, and the seven say what they do to the footage rather than repeat their names: Film, Music video, Family, Travel, Documentary, Chrono, Quality. MUSIC YOU DECIDE ABOUT Pick a track and the cuts land on the beat, though not on every beat: one shot spans several of them, so the film has a pulse instead of a stutter. Skip the music and the film keeps the sound the clips were shot with. Where somebody is talking, singing, laughing or applauding, the track drops to a fifth of its level and the voices come up, so the "Happy Birthday" is audible over the music. ARGUE WITH THE DRAFT The app says how many moments it found and how many it used. Tap any shot and the clip opens as one image of its whole length, every moment marked along it. Choose a different moment and only that shot changes. Drag a shot somewhere else and the film re-cuts around it at the same length. Three arrangements of the same footage sit side by side. FOURTEEN LOOKS Ten are .cube tables of the kind a colourist hands you, four are built in. The look you pick is drawn on a frame of your own film, graded by the same table the export runs. A BETTER LENS ON THE PHOTO LIBRARY The iPhone library is a long scroll. Life2Film reads it as a calendar wheel: spin to any month or day and see what you filmed. WHAT YOU CAN DO • Turn hours of raw clips into 15, 30, 60 or 180 seconds, or t
