You have drilled the deck. You know every card. Then the character turns up on a menu, in a message, on an exam paper — and nothing comes. There is a reason for that. A flashcard shows you the character and then asks whether you knew it. You flip it over, see that you were right, and grade yourself — after you have already seen the answer. That is recognition. Reading Chinese takes recall, and they are not the same skill. THE HERO METHOD This app never shows you a character and asks whether you knew it. You are given the word and a row of empty slots waiting for its characters. What you get as the prompt is your choice: the meaning, the pinyin, or both. The character itself has to come out of memory. Then you have to find it on a grid where every tile is drawn from your own HSK level or the levels below it, so there is nothing you can rule out on sight and nothing the screen will hand you. Guess wrong and the tile is struck out, and you still have to find the right character before you move on. Recall, then recognition, on every word, across all 5,000 of them. That is the process that puts a character somewhere you can reach it when it matters, and it is the whole reason this app exists. The surprise is that it does not feel like drilling. The characters are large and beautifully drawn, a round takes seconds, and people finish a block without noticing. As one reviewer put it: "Awesome design. Forgot I was learning." MAKE IT HARDER AS YOU GO • Assist Mode highlights the tiles holding your answer, for your first week with characters • The classic 3×3 grid is where every new install starts, and where most people stay • 2×2 if characters are brand new; 4×4 for when nine tiles stop being difficult • Work from the pinyin alone, English hidden — sound to character • Work from the meaning alone, pinyin hidden — and if you think pinyin becomes a crutch, switch it off on day one and never see it again • Switch the whole app to traditional characters WHEN YOU GET STUCK Hint strikes out several wrong answers; Gimme places a character for you. Both are counted, and every block ends with your right taps, wrong taps, Gimme taps and an accuracy score — so you know whether you knew it or just got through it.
