Knotline takes a famously simple board game and lets it grow. The marks and the turn-by-turn play never change — but the grid scales from a pocket-sized square up to a board wide enough to get lost in, and the difficulty climbs right along with it. Four boards are available from the start. Classic keeps the familiar 3x3 geometry, where a line of three wins. Extended moves to 4x4, adding room for misdirection. Open plays on a 5x5 grid and requires a line of four to close a round. Gomoku stretches to 9x9, where five in a row is the target and the board is large enough that threats can develop from several directions at once. The rules shift with the grid; the habit of reading the board has to shift with them. You always play as X and move first. Tap an empty cell, the computer responds, and the round continues until one side completes a line or no moves remain. When a round ends, a line is drawn straight through the marks that decided it — not a highlight, not a color change, but a line through the winning sequence. Draws are possible on every board and are recorded as such. Knotline runs without a login, without a subscription, and without ads. Nothing is transmitted anywhere; the app has no network dependency and functions identically whether or not your phone can reach a signal. The opponent scales across three levels. Easy introduces random play into its decisions, which means it can be beaten without a plan. Medium plays mostly optimal moves and will punish obvious errors. Hard actively blocks your threats and looks for fork opportunities on the smaller boards — positions where two winning paths open at once and only one can be stopped. The gap between Medium and Hard is meaningful on Classic and Extended; on Gomoku, even Hard has room to surprise you. Each board keeps its own records: wins, losses, draws, and your longest win streak tracked separately per mode. A round won on Gomoku does not touch your Classic tally. The records screen shows all four at once, and a reset option is available if you want to start a tally from scratch — per board, on your terms. The 9x9 board is where the game earns the most of its time. Early moves feel low-stakes; the grid absorbs them. By the midgame, patterns are emerging from multiple directions and the question shifts from where to win to where to prevent losing. It is a different problem than Classic, not just a larger version of the same one. Knotline is one mechanic across four board sizes, three AI opponents, and a separate win-loss-draw record for each board. It stays a small, single-purpose app — made for people who like tic-tac-toe and want more room to play it than three squares by three.
