Here are some of the major festivals celebrated in Kerala: Onam: Onam is the most significant festival in Kerala, celebrated annually in the Malayalam month of Chingam (August-September). It is a harvest festival that marks the homecoming of the mythical King Mahabali. People decorate their homes with floral carpets (known as Pookalam), indulge in traditional feasts (Onam Sadhya), and participate in various cultural events like boat races (Vallam Kali) and folk dances (Thiruvathira Kali). Vishu: Vishu is the Malayalam New Year festival celebrated in the month of Medam (April). It is marked by the Vishukkani, an arrangement of auspicious items like rice, fruits, flowers, and gold coins, which people view as the first thing on Vishu morning to bring prosperity throughout the year. Fireworks, traditional feasting, and family gatherings are also part of the celebrations. Thrissur Pooram: Thrissur Pooram is one of the most spectacular temple festivals in Kerala, held annually at the Vadakkunnathan Temple in Thrissur. It usually falls in the Malayalam month of Medam (April-May). The festival features a grand procession of caparisoned elephants, traditional percussion performances like the 'Panchavadyam,' and a mesmerizing display of fireworks. Attukal Pongala: Attukal Pongala is a unique festival celebrated at the Attukal Bhagavathy Temple in Thiruvananthapuram, usually in February-March. It holds the Guinness World Record for the largest gathering of women for a religious activity. Women prepare a sweet dish called 'Pongala' in earthen pots as an offering to the goddess.
