Kokage — like resting in the shade of a tree. "Kokage" (木陰) is Japanese for the cool shade beneath a tree. It is also a local-first AI companion app where the whole conversation — from generating replies to animating your avatar — runs right on your device. Bring your favorite avatar. Load a VRM file of your own (VRM 0.x or 1.0) and your chosen character comes to life on screen — changing expressions, gesturing naturally, and moving their lips in time with their voice as they talk with you. Speak, and hear a voice answer. Talk into the microphone and Kokage listens. Replies can be read aloud in natural Japanese speech, which makes the conversation feel much closer than text alone. Show what's in front of you. Pick a vision-capable model and you can attach a single camera shot to a message. "What do you think this is?" just works. It remembers only what you approve. Paste in your own notes to give Kokage local knowledge to draw on. Long-term memories are proposed one at a time, and only the ones you explicitly approve are ever saved. Private by design. Your conversations, audio, camera images, and local knowledge are never sent to the developer. No account, no ads, no analytics, no cloud inference service. AI models and voices are downloaded once, at setup, after you review exactly what will be installed and how large it is. Like stepping into the shade on a busy day — Kokage is an app for that kind of moment.
