صحيح مسلم هو جامعٌ للأحاديث التي وردت عن النبي صلّى الله عليه وسلّم؛ اقتصر مؤلّفه على ما صحّ من الحديث، وترك كلّ ما كان في إسناده ضعفٌ أو وهن. وقد افتتح الإمام صحيحَه بمقدّمةٍ ذكر فيها سبب تأليفه الكتابَ، ونهجَه الذي سار عليه، ثمّ ذكر بضع مسائل في علوم الحديث التي تهمّ قارئ الكتاب، ثمّ أورد بعد تلك المقدّمة موضوعاتِ الحديث في كتابه، وجعل ترتيبها في كتبٍ، سُمِّيت بأسماء المواضيع الفقهيّة والشرعيّة، مثل: الطهارة، والإيمان، والصّلاة، والصّوم، والزّكاة، وغير ذلك.
