No matter how you look at it, it's not just wrong for our people to use difficult Chinese characters in their everyday speech, even when our language is so excellent. It's profoundly wrong. The reason our language is so distorted today is because, when we liberated ourselves from Japanese subjugation and regained our country, we should have reclaimed our language, even our spoken language. Instead, we failed to discard the Japanese words we were forced to learn during our time as slaves. Instead, we continued to use the Chinese characters, simply pronouncing them as our own. Furthermore, because schools taught Japanese instead of Korean, everyone who graduated from Baekgot was tainted by the Japanese language. Even after leaving Baekgot, not only newspapers and broadcasts, but also the language used in government (administrative terminology) and books was almost entirely Japanese. Consequently, our language gradually became relegated to the backseat and died out from disuse. Because we primarily use Hangul instead of Chinese characters, many mistakenly believe that all Chinese characters written in Hangul are Korean. That's understandable. Since the Korean language is taught in schools, the Korean language is used in the country, and books are written in Korean, who would consider Korean language not our language? But our language exists perfectly well and separately. The Korean language widely used today is not our language at all. Our language is the Korean language of the Baedal people, created by our people from the very beginning and honed and refined throughout our long history. While our language was gradually being consumed by Chinese characters due to the mistakes of the upper class (the ruling class), the Aram (people)—the lowly Aram who worked and lived among them, and even among those lowly Aram, the flowers (women) who held the lowest positions—our grandmothers, mothers, aunts, older sisters, and older sisters—our daughters—have always cherished, nurtured, and protected our language. For a long time, we lost many precious Korean words while being oppressed by Chinese characters, but our language, which we had steadfastly preserved, was finally decimated by Japanese colonial rule. After regaining our country, for eighty years, almost no one cared for it, and everyone was scrambling to despise it. This has left our language in a precarious state today. Furthermore, caught up in the seemingly slick trick of globalization, English is flooding in like a tidal wave, rapidly eroding even the few remaining Korean words. It is time to revive our language. Anyone who understands our "candle in the wind" predicament must do their part to preserve it. I, by chance, opened my eyes to the distorted nature of our language, uncovered dying words, refined Chinese characters into simple Korean, and published a dictionary, Pureun Baedal Maljip, which interprets Korean words entirely in Korean.
