『Chaegeundam (菜根譚)』 is a book on the philosophy of life written by Hong Ja-seong (洪自誠, 1572?~1620?), a scholar and writer in the late Ming Dynasty. It is a book that captures the essence of Eastern thought in concise and concise sentences. The title, 『Chaegeundam』, means “chewing the roots of vegetables,” which implies realizing the true way of life in a simple and frugal life. This book exquisitely harmonizes the ideas of Confucianism, Taoism, and Buddhism, and conveys human relationships, life, how to control the mind, and insight into the principles of the world in short but deep sentences. In particular, it combines Confucius's benevolence and propriety, Laozi's inaction and nature, and Buddhist Zen insight, and through this, it presents a life that maintains balance in reality while practicing human moral values. 『Chaegeundam』 is largely divided into the first and second collections. The first collection focuses on training the body and living in the world, while the latter collection emphasizes cultivation of character and the wisdom of seclusion.
