Harun al-Rashid called him "the devil of poetry." Al-Akhfash said, "We have never seen anyone more knowledgeable about poetry than al-Asma'i." Abu al-Tayyib al-Lughawi said, "He was the most proficient in language, the most knowledgeable about poetry, and the most prodigious in memory."
