The Greatest Jurisprudence is considered one of the oldest and most important works on the fundamentals of religion among the Sunnis. It was compiled by Imam Abu Hanifa al-Nu'man ibn Thabit, and along with his other treatises on doctrine, such as "The Scholar and the Student," "The Will," and "The Simplest Jurisprudence," it became the primary reference upon which the Hanafi Maturidis rely for their fundamentals. Abu Mansur al-Baghdadi stated that it was originally compiled to refute the Qadarites. The book's attribution to Imam Abu Hanifa is established and has been mentioned by a large number of scholars, including Ibn Abi al-'Izz in his commentary on al-Tahawiyyah. He explained that Imam Abu Hanifa called the fundamentals of religion he compiled in papers "The Greater Jurisprudence," and he quoted this book in more than one place in his commentary. The book's attribution was also confirmed by Allama Laknawi in his book "Al-Fawa'id Al-Bahiyyah," as was Haji Khalifa in Kashf Al-Zunun. Imam Abu Hanifa named his book "The Greater Jurisprudence" to distinguish it from "The Lesser Jurisprudence." "The Lesser Jurisprudence" refers to the branches that the person responsible for performing the religious duties is required to perform and acquire in compliance with the commands and prohibitions contained in the Holy Quran and the Prophetic Sunnah.
