Charles de Coster (1827–1879) was a famous writer of the 19th century, whose work formed the basis of Belgian literature. He wrote his best works in the old, Flemish language. The novel "The Legend of Ulenspiegel" was published in 1867. The full title is "The Legend of the Heroic, Joyous and Glorious Adventures of Ulenspiegel and Lamme Goedzak in Flanders and Other Countries" (French: La Legende et les Aventures heroiques, joyeuses et glorieuses d'Ulenspiegel et de Lamme Goedzak au pays de Flandres et ailleurs). De Coster was one of many writers of the 19th century who used folk tales, adapting them to suit their own purposes. Ulenspiegel in De Coster's novel becomes a Protestant hero during the Dutch Revolution, in which the inhabitants of the author's native Flanders played an important role, although it itself remained under Spanish rule. De Coster used many stories about the ingenious scoundrel Ulenspiegel in his book, but at the same time he tells far from entertaining things - about the tortures of the Inquisition, auto-da-fe, injustice and the fight against it. Ulenspiegel wears on his chest an incense burner with the ashes of his father, burned at the stake for heresy. The phrase “The ashes of Claes knock on my heart” has become a catchphrase. Ulenspiegel’s comrade Lamme Gudzak, fat and good-natured, plays the role of a kind of Sancho Panza, and in an allegorical sense appears as the salt of the Flemish earth. Later, the book was published with linocut illustrations by the famous Belgian modernist artist and engraver Frans Mazerel. The legend of Till Ulenspiegel, created in the style of a heroic novel of the XVI century, is a vivid expression of the Belgian patriotic epic. The novel is based on German legends of the 14th century, which gave birth to the joker Ulenspiegel. As a literary character, he was compared to Don Quixote by Cervantes and even to Panurge by Rabelais. The novel is saturated with folklore motifs, full of folk humor, sometimes barbarically direct, but invariably life-affirming. "The Legend of Ulenspiegel" is called the "Flemish Bible", it is a unique epic book in its genre, from which Belgian literature originates. Having preserved all the most characteristic features of folk legends, the author created the image of Ulenspiegel - flesh from the flesh of the people, a jack of all trades, a brave geez, whose weapons in the fight against enemies are a striking word and a caustic song, mocking laughter and a sharp sword.
