Ibn Khaldun said, “We heard from our sheikhs in education councils that the foundations of this art and its pillars are four books: Adab al-Katib by Ibn Qutaybah, Kitab al-Kamil by al-Mubarrad, Kitab al-Bayan wa al-Tabyin by al-Jahiz, and Kitab al-Amali by Abu Ali al-Qali, and other than these four, it was followed by it and branches of it.” Abu Othman Amr bin Bahr Mahboob Al-Kanani Al-Laythi Al-Basri, (159-255 AH) an Arab writer, one of the major imams of literature in the Abbasid era, was born in Basra and died there.
