Saint Spyridon of Trimythous is one of the most venerated saints in the world. He was born on the island of Cyprus at the end of the 3rd century. Little is known about his earthly life. Spyridon was a shepherd, had a wife and children, and led a righteous and pious life. He gave all his savings to those in need. The Lord bestowed upon him the gift of miracles; he healed the seriously ill and cast out demons. When his wife died, Spyridon was already widely known among the people, and he was soon appointed bishop of the city of Trimythous in western Cyprus. In his episcopal see, he continued to perform works of mercy, carefully caring for his flock, and welcoming strangers and the poor. And, as before, miracles always accompanied Saint Spyridon. The saint proved himself a zealous guardian of the Orthodox faith and a theologian. Thus, at the First Ecumenical Council in 325, he engaged in a verbal battle with an Arian—a heretic who denied the divinity of Jesus Christ. The Arian presented Saint Spyridon with numerous proofs of his supposed correctness. He was a talented rhetorician and constructed his speech with great skill. The bishop's response was simple and brief. "Listen, philosopher, to what I am about to tell you," Spyridon said. "We believe that Almighty God, by His Word and Spirit, created heaven, earth, man, and the entire visible and invisible world out of nothing. This Word is the Son of God, who came down to earth for our sins, was born of the Virgin, lived among men, suffered, died for our salvation, and then rose again, redeeming original sin with His suffering, and resurrecting the human race with Himself." We believe that He is consubstantial and equal in honor with the Father, and we believe this without any wicked inventions, for this mystery is impossible to comprehend with the human mind." This simple and profound answer from the bishop so astonished the Arian that he renounced his errors. At this same Ecumenical Council, the saint demonstrated his famous proof of the triune nature of the Holy Trinity. Spyridon took a brick and squeezed it: fire rose from the brick, water flowed downward, and clay remained in the saint's hands. Just as three elements united in a single brick, so too in the Holy Trinity there are three hypostases, the bishop explained. The relics of Saint Spyridon rest in Corfu, in the church of Agios Spyridonos, whose doors are always open. Four times a year, the relics are taken out for processions, and once every six months they are "changed" (before Easter and on the eve of the saint's feast day, celebrated on December 12 (25, new style)), meaning they are literally given a new outfit and footwear. The fact that the clothing and footwear worn on the saint's relics has been scientifically confirmed, but not explained.
