According to legend, the icon was painted in the 17th century after an unknown iconographer had a vision of the Mother of God. During the schism in the Russian Church, this iconographer could not comprehend the meaning of Nikon's reforms and fell into madness. He then began to fervently pray to the Most Holy Theotokos for enlightenment. After her vision, he received a promise of healing if he painted an icon of the Mother of God exactly as She had appeared to him. The iconographer fulfilled his vow and named the finished image "Addition of Mind by the Most Holy Theotokos."
