Store description excerpt

The healer and great martyr Panteleimon was born in Nicomedia to a noble pagan father and a Christian mother. His mother died when he was still a child, leaving his father to raise and educate him. At that time, emperors in the Roman Empire changed frequently, wars were raging everywhere, and after completing his studies, Pantoleon (Panteleimon's name before baptism) was sent to study with a renowned physician. It was then, having met the miraculously surviving priests of the Nicomedia Christian church, which had burned down with all its parishioners, that he came to believe in Christ and was baptized, although this was mortally dangerous: in 303, the four tetrarchs who ruled the empire—Diocletian, Maximian, Galerius, and Constantius Chlorus—initiated the Great Persecution, which outlawed Christians, and the edict of 304 required the rulers of all settlements to gather all residents, regardless of gender or age, for a collective sacrifice. Those who refused were to be executed. But either his father's connections worked, or word of the young, skilled physician reached Emperor Maximian—he wished to see Panteleimon at court. However, the Christian neophyte quickly became an outcast there: he distributed money, visited prisons to treat prisoners, many of whom were Christians, and did not charge the poor for his treatment. His popularity grew, which, naturally, irritated his rival doctors. As often happened in such cases, it all ended with denunciation, arrest, torture, and execution in 305. Troparion, Tone 3 Holy passion-bearer and healer Panteleimon,/ pray to the Merciful God,/ that He may grant forgiveness of sins// to our souls. Kontakion, Tone 5 You who imitate the Merciful One/ and receive the grace of healing from Him,/ passion-bearer and martyr of Christ our God,/ heal the infirmities of our souls by your prayers,/ ever drive away the temptations of those who faithfully cry out: // save us, O Lord.
