Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker is one of the most revered Christian saints. His name is known far beyond the Church, and his memory is preserved not only in religious tradition but also in the cultural heritage of many peoples. Saint Nicholas is associated with numerous miracles that occurred during sea voyages. According to legend, he was sailing from Lycia to Palestine when his ship encountered a severe storm. The sailors turned to him to pray to God, and through his prayer, the storm subsided. Soon, one of the sailors fell from the mast and fell to his death. Through the saint's prayer, he was revived. After this incident, Saint Nicholas became especially venerated by travelers, and especially by sailors. Saint Nicholas is known as a benefactor. One of the most famous legends tells how he saved three girls from being sold to a brothel by secretly planting three bags of gold in their father's house when the family was on the brink of complete ruin. After Saint Nicholas helped those three girls, he was ordained a priest. Later, the question of choosing a new bishop arose in Myra in Lycia. During this deliberation, one of the bishops had a vision: the first person to enter the church in the morning would become bishop, and his name would be Nicholas. Thus, the saint was chosen as administrator of the diocese. In the Orthodox Church, Saint Nicholas is honored twice a year. Saint Nicholas the Summer is celebrated on May 22nd—this commemorates the transfer of his relics from Myra in Lycia to the city of Bari to protect them during Turkish raids. Saint Nicholas the Winter is celebrated on December 19th—the anniversary of his death. The Church also commemorates Saint Nicholas every week, on Thursday. In icons, Saint Nicholas the Winter is usually depicted wearing a mitre—a richly decorated episcopal headdress. Saint Nicholas the Summer is depicted with his head uncovered.
