Matrona Dmitrievna Nikonova—that was the secular name of the future saint. She was born in 1881 in the small village of Sebino in the Tula province. The peasant family, into which Matrona was to become the fourth child, lived in extreme poverty—and the parents made the difficult decision to send their future daughter to an orphanage. But, as the saint's life tells, her mother changed her mind about taking this terrible step after a prophetic dream: her daughter appeared to her as a white bird with a human face and closed eyes. The dream proved prophetic—her daughter was born blind, and she had no eyes at all—her tightly closed eyelids covered her eye sockets. It is also said that the baby had a bulge in the shape of a cross on her chest. From childhood, Matrona loved going to church with all her heart, and at about the age of eight, the future saint began to predict the future and heal the sick. Sufferers from neighboring villages came to the family's home, and the girl, with the help of a gift from God and prayer, raised even the paralyzed. At the age of 18, Matronushka's legs became paralyzed. She never walked again, but she never complained of her illness, humbly bearing her cross. When the 1917 Revolution broke out, Matrona and her friend Lydia Yankova found themselves homeless. By 1925, the ascetic moved to Moscow. Life was difficult for her—kind people provided her with food and shelter. All the years until her death, the saint devoted herself entirely to people—people came to her for healing, and the flow never dried up. The saint refused no one, and through her prayers to God, many received what they asked for. She said: "I will meet everyone who turns to me for help at their death, every single one." Matrona's help had nothing to do with witchcraft or incantations, which the Church has always deeply condemned. The saint healed through sincere prayer for people. On May 2, 1952, Matronushka departed to the Lord. According to her life, the blessed one knew the hour of her death three days in advance. She was buried at the Danilovskoye Cemetery, and from the first days after her death, pilgrims began coming to her grave—some with gratitude for her asceticism and miracles of healing, others with prayerful requests. On March 8, 1998, the relics of Blessed Matrona were transferred to the Danilov Monastery, and then to a church on the grounds of the Intercession Stavropegic Monastery on Taganka.
