Store description excerpt

The history of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God begins in the 16th century in Kazan. After a devastating fire that engulfed the city in June 1579, the Mother of God began appearing to a nine-year-old girl named Matrona, the daughter of a Tsar's strelets. The Virgin Mary commanded her to find her image in one of the ashes. At first, no one believed the girl, but the visions continued. Only after persistent appeals to the local bishop did the search begin, and the image, wrapped in cloth, was found in one of the ashes. By decree of Tsar Ivan the Terrible, the Mother of God Convent was built on the site of the icon's discovery, where the newly discovered image was placed. Immediately after its appearance in Kazan, miracles began to occur from the icon through the prayers of believers. As early as 1594, the future Patriarch Hermogenes, then Metropolitan of Kazan, wrote a work entitled "The Tale and Miracles of the Most Pure Theotokos, and Her Honorable and Glorious Appearance of the Icon in Kazan" and composed a service to this icon. However, the Kazan Icon's nationwide fame and popular veneration are also explained by its inextricable connection with key, fateful moments in Russian history.
