Let's meet again at 11 PM. iNets is an app designed to recreate the feel of instant messengers from around 1999 on today's smartphones. There are already plenty of fast and convenient chat apps out there. This one is different. ■ The server doesn't know your conversations. Messages are encrypted on your device before sending. If the recipient is online, the server simply relays the message and doesn't leave a written record anywhere. It only holds encrypted messages when the recipient is offline, and deletes them upon confirmation of receipt. There's no table to store conversation logs. The server also writes down everything it has without hiding anything. • Who is connected to whom (contact connections) • How many messages were received from whom while offline (records of messages held) • Whether the user is online and the last time logged in (in minutes, not seconds) If it doesn't have something, it cannot be disclosed even if requested. That's the design of this app. ■ The Feel of 1999 - Upon startup, it begins with the dial-up connection sound and "CONNECT 56000bps". - You find the other party by their UIN number. Numbers are not reissued. - "Dinner," "Bath," "Going to Sleep"—you can leave a short message when you leave your seat. - A separate window opens for each contact. There is no thread list. - Gray window, blue title bar, dotted text, and sound effects. ■ Things We Decided Not to Include Read receipts, typing indicators, stamps, reactions, infinitely rewindable history, group chat. These aren't "not yet available," but rather things we decided not to include. A little inconvenience is closer to the conversations of that time. ■ About History Messages remain only on your device, a fixed number for each contact. When a new message arrives, the oldest messages are deleted in order. They are not stored on the server. See you again at 11 PM.
